This is the first issue in which we have a guest editor who is also India's best commentator on culture, Shanta Serbjeet Singh,.She brought the best of Asian traditions together, from Korea to Japan, China, Malaysia, Singapore....The gender contexts and issues in Indian dance and the stree-vesham aspects and forms were platformed. The issue was released by the Chief Minister of Delhi, herself among the most dynamic women leaders of India. The issue also was base for future focus on Asian traditions, in India. Many NGO's and social organisations ordered a copy so ONLY 15 left. CM of Delhi launched it. |

Gujarat, a state with no classical dance tradition but a rich variety of folk forms, became the focus of this issue. It was the first-ever focus on a state, its gurus, institutions, prima donnas and the like. New writers were discovered and the populace was delighted somebody had finally done something on and for them! The Maharaja of Baroda did the honours of releasing it with the Vice Chancellor of M.S.University, in attendance! The issue had rare pictures and won many admirers. 10 copies left. |

Choreography became the focus in this issue with Daksha Sheth on the cover. Seven serious choreographers - Birju Maharaj, Astad Deboo, Uttara Cooralwala, Daksha Sheth, Sachin Shankar, Kumudini Lakhia, Ram Gopal were featured in depth. The father figure of choreography Uday Shankar was platformed in depth. The issue almost became a book, copied by others! Ph.D students are still referring to it. The first-ever issue on a form: Bharatanatyam. With a resplendent Anita Ratnam on the cover, as face of young India, this issue had many in-depth articles on the from contributed and culled from many sources. A heritage specific issue, it also platformed what was happening in and to the form. Lots of interesting facets of the form were shared with all, including some never-seen before pictures. A great guru on cover (Ramakutty Nair) in a very natural pose and a great issue on Indian dance internationally. Focus on Indians and foreigners who have helped spread Indian dance worldwide. Malyasia, Trinidad, Australia., Mexico, America, England, France... The issue started a trend in dance writing when those settled abroad desired a special section. The Inaugural issue was a major arrival on dance-writing and publishing scene in India. 200 plus pages, old treasures of illustrations from the Mohan Khokar Dance Archives; his in-depth articles on Lahore and Lanka, the two forgotten citadels of Indian dance; news and views from all over and special contributions, celebrations and events made this a very handsome compilation that made a national mark and international success.
